The Government is gearing up to launch a National Lung Cancer Screening Program ([BE5] NLSCP) aimed at early detection. This program will help to prevent over 500 deaths from lung cancer each year. The screening services will be available from July 2025.

The exact cause of prostate cancer [BE6] is unknown, but certain factors can increase the chances of developing it. The risk increases with age – prostate cancer mainly affects men aged 60 or older. Men who have a close relative (father or brother) with prostate cancer, particularly if they were diagnosed before age 65, are more likely to develop the disease than men with no family history. The risk is even higher for men with more than one close relative who has had prostate cancer.

The exact cause of ovarian cancer [BE7] is unknown. Risk factors include being over 50 years of age and postmenopausal; never having children; having endometriosis; and lifestyle factors, such as smoking and being overweight.

Liver cancer[BE8] - infection with hepatitis B is the biggest known risk factor for developing primary liver cancer in Australia. People with chronic hepatitis B or hepatitis C infections have a 20 – 100 times increased risk of developing primary liver cancer. The hepatitis B virus affects the liver cells. This stimulates the immune system to attack the virus. However, the immune response causes inflammation in the liver, which can lead to ongoing damage.
